Don with wife Nancy and son, Matt Chavlovich |
As Chairman, President, Brother, husband,
father, and son, Don Jones was a very
special person. His thoughtful leadership
and vision promoted change and provided
direction to Alpha Chi Rho at the chapter
level, with the National Fraternity and the
Educational Foundation. Donald had high
expectations for us all.
After a brave two-year struggle with bladder
cancer, Don entered Chapter Eternal on
December 1, 2004. That’s why his family has
established the Donald F. Jones
Scholarship—to continue his
legacy and build a talent pool of future
leaders for Alpha Chi Rho. |
Brother Donald F. Jones, Alpha Phi, Purdue University,
Pharmacy ’68, held many leadership positions. As an
undergraduate, he was the Postulant Educator. He served
as Graduate Councilor from 1977-1979, Vice President
from 1979-1981, and President from 1981-1983 on the
National Council.
As chairman of the Finance Committee since 1983, he was
instrumental in the purchase of the National
Headquarters in Neptune, NJ. Because of his dedication
to Alpha Chi Rho, Don was named “Graduate Man of the
Year” in 1992. At the time of his death, he served on
the Alpha Chi Rho Educational Foundation Board of
Trustees as Chairman.
In his community, Don served as a Little League coach in
Metuchen, NJ. He was an avid booster of the Pop Warner
Football Program and supporter of the wrestling program.
At St. Benedict’s HS, he became an avid soccer fan—a
passion that continued at UCONN where his son, Matt
Chavlovich, played goalkeeper for four years. At Johnson
& Johnson, Don actively participated in various
leadership initiatives in supply chain, project
management, and product development. He earned his MBA
at Rutgers University and was active in the Product
Development and Managerial Association.
The best way to summarize the kind of man that Don was
is to quote a line from his eulogy that was written by
his son, Matt: “There are two kinds of people in this
world; those who come into a room and say “here I am”
and those who come in and say “ah, there you are”. Don
was the latter.
Two scholarships will be awarded to an undergraduate and
graduate who
is a role model for leadership in his chapter and community.
A brother does not have to receive the highest GPA or be
an all-star athlete. He needs to be someone who has
demonstrated leadership potential with values consistent
with the Brotherhood. To apply for this scholarship,
